Jerma & Pirot weekend

Jerma lies south of Pirot — the opposite valley from Stara Planina. Day one is the canyon and the Sukovo and Poganovo monasteries; you naturally return to town. Day two stays in Pirot: Kale, the Museum of Ponišavlje, kilim heritage, and gastro. Optional night in Zvonačka Banja instead of the city.

What you'll experience

  • Day 1: Jerma canyon viewpoints, Sukovo and Poganovo
  • Overnight in Pirot (the logical return) or Zvonačka Banja
  • Day 2: Kale fortress, museum, Pirot kilim, old town
  • Optional tasting of kačkavalj or peglana sausage

Route

  1. 1. Jerma Canyon viewpoints

Deep gorge with turquoise water and cliffs — stop at marked viewpoints for photos and 15–30 minute walks where trails exist. The canyon section alone deserves 1–2 hours.

  2. 2. Sukovo Monastery

Historic monastery in a peaceful setting — short visit (30–45 min), respect opening hours and silence. Iconography and architecture worth a guided explanation if you book a guide.

  3. 3. Poganovo Monastery

Famous medieval monastery near the Bulgarian border — allow 45–60 minutes. One of the highlights of the route; parking nearby, then a short walk to the church complex.
