Detailed overview of selected routes

Self-guided with your own car or rent-a-car from Niš — waterfalls, Jerma Canyon and monasteries. Practical tips, rental partner and optional local guide.

Self-guided tour

Stara Planina Waterfalls Route

Estimated duration
6–8 h
Difficulty
Moderate
Best season
May–October (best); winter only with winter tyres
Vehicle
Standard car on main roads; last village sections can be narrow.

A self-guided day trip with your own car or a rental from Niš/Pirot. You choose the pace, how long to stay at each waterfall, and when to take breaks in mountain villages — ideal if you like flexibility and photography.

Practical tips for your own visit

  1. Start early (around 7–8 AM) for easier parking and good light at viewpoints.
  2. Bring hiking shoes, water, snacks, and a light jacket — it gets cooler and windier higher up.
  3. Download offline maps; mobile signal is weak in some areas.
  4. Cash is useful for village shops, parking, and local products.
  5. In winter, check road conditions before leaving; chains may be required.
  6. Respect marked paths near waterfalls — rocks can be slippery after rain.

Stops

  • Stara Planina waterfalls (Tupavica, Bigar, etc.)

The main reason to come — several waterfalls within short drives or walks. Plan 2–3 hours total for photos and short walks; some require a few minutes on foot from parking.

  • Topli Do

Authentic mountain village — coffee break, local cheese and honey, traditional houses. A good mid-route stop before continuing toward higher viewpoints.

  • Dojkinci

One of the best-known villages on Stara Planina — architecture, hospitality, starting point for hikes. Allow time for a walk through the village and views of surrounding peaks.

Self-guided tour

Jerma Canyon — spiritual & nature route

Estimated duration
7–9 h
Difficulty
Easy to moderate
Best season
April–November; spring for greenery, autumn for colours
Vehicle
Standard car sufficient; short walks from parking at monasteries.

Drive at your own pace through one of Serbia's most dramatic river canyons, with stops at historic monasteries. Mostly scenic driving with optional short walks — suitable for a relaxed self-guided day from Pirot or Niš.

Practical tips for your own visit

  1. Drive Pirot → Dimitrovgrad direction, then follow signs for Jerma Canyon and monasteries.
  2. Monasteries may have dress code (covered shoulders/knees) and quiet hours — plan visits for morning or early afternoon.
  3. Several viewpoints along the canyon have no facilities — bring water and snacks.
  4. Road along the canyon is winding; take your time and use pull-offs for photos.
  5. Combine with an early start to avoid summer heat on exposed sections.
  6. GPS/map pin for Poganovo is essential — the last stretch is well signposted but remote.

Stops

  • Jerma Canyon viewpoints

Deep gorge with turquoise water and cliffs — stop at marked viewpoints for photos and 15–30 minute walks where trails exist. The canyon section alone deserves 1–2 hours.

  • Sukovo Monastery

Historic monastery in a peaceful setting — short visit (30–45 min), respect opening hours and silence. Iconography and architecture worth a guided explanation if you book a guide.

  • Poganovo Monastery

Famous medieval monastery near the Bulgarian border — allow 45–60 minutes. One of the highlights of the route; parking nearby, then a short walk to the church complex.
